Visit to Bagley School in Dora

We had a great visit to Bagley School in Dora today.  I along with Fox 6 weather intern Issac Williams spoke to the 5th graders there about weather and weather safety.  The students had just received their Fox 6 Weather in Classroom booklets so they were ready to learn some meteorology.

 
I challenged a few of the students to some fairly difficult weather questions.  I was so impressed with their answers I gave them NOAA weather radios.

 

By the way, thanks for the wonderful cookie cake.  It was great!

Colder Temperatures Tonight

Take a look at our 24 hour temperature drop so far this evening.  Temperatures will continue to fall tonight into the mid to upper 40s.

Colder Temperatures Are Coming

Today was an award-winning day!  I love this weather.  You can't beat clear blue skies and comfortable temperatures.  Temperatures were in the 70s today - Tuscaloosa had a high of 78, Birmingham 76, and Anniston 75.  A major dip in the mercury is expected by tomorrow morning.

 

The cold front is now to the south of us and we can expect winds out of the north at 8-12mph.  Cool high pressure will dominate the forecast through the weekend.  Highs will reach only the upper 60s by Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

 

The forecast looks dry through next week.  We'll gradually see temperatures reaching the lower 80s by the end of the week.  The GFS is indicating we could see a chance of showers and thunderstorms by late next weekend.

A Cool Change

The passage of a dry, cold front will make a noticeable change in our weather.
Look for a mostly sunny and breezy day today.  Highs are expected to be close to 77-degrees...North winds 10-15 mph.  Tonight:  Clear and cool...lighs winds...lows near 45.

This weekend:  Sunny...morning temps in the mid 40s...highs near 70.

Next Week:  Mostly sunny...morning temps in the 40s to 50s...highs in the 70s to 80s.

Forecast is Cooler

We started the day with some patchy dense fog, but by the afternoon sunshine prevailed with warm temperaturs in the 80s. 

 

 

 

Now - bit change is coming.  It's really going to feel like Fall soon!  A weak cool front will move through Alabama tonight.  The air mass is dry so we will not see any rain and probably very few clouds.  Temperatures by Friday morning will fall to about 58 degrees.  You'll notice a north wind through the day and this will help usher in some much colder air.  Expect highs Friday in the mid 70s.  If you have plans for a high school football game - expect much cooler temperatures.  A light jacket will be required.

High pressure will dictate our weather through the weekend.  The biggest change over the weekend will be temperatures in the mid to upper 40s.  No rain is expected through next week.

Becoming Sunny

We begin our Thursday with patchy dense fog.  The layer of fog and cloud cover is expected to begin burning off by mid-morning.  By this afternoon, look for another day with mostlly sunny skies.  Highs today will likely be the warmest over the next 7-days...close to 85-degrees. 
Tonight, a cold front is expected to move through Alabama.  It's expected to be a dry frontal passage, bringing cool, dry air our way for Friday and the weekend.   Expect highs on Friday to top out in the mid-70s under sunny skies.

Saturday and Sunday:  Mostly clear...morning temps in the 40s to low 50s...highs in the low to mid 70s.

Monday through Thursday:  Mostly clear...morning temps in the 40s to 50s...highs in the 70s to low 80s.

Wednesday PM Forecast Discussion

 
As expected a very slow moving front has made its way through our area and now the stormy weather has shifted into far south Alabama. We’ve included an image of strong to severe storms now impacting the greater Mobile area. A severe thunderstorm watch has also been in place for south Mississippi and this extends slightly into the southwest part of the state. Our area should enjoy another mostly clear sky again tonight, although some fog may return over our southern communities…lows will be near 59-degrees.

We will have one more warm day tomorrow before conditions start to change. An upper level trough will force a sharp front through here on Friday. This will be a dry frontal passage so we don’t expect any rainfall. We will however be experiencing some big changes in temperature.  We will have an increasing north wind on Friday followed by lows near 50-degrees Friday night. Highs for Saturday and Sunday will struggle to reach the low 70s, with overnight lows in the cold 40s. Each day will be very dry, with clear-blue skies!

The wind flow should become more southerly by next Wednesday. Still, we expect lots of sunshine and pleasant temperatures for the first half of next week.  Enjoy the fall weather!

Talking About April's Fury At The Local NWA Chapter Meeting

  
 
Today we had an opportunity to share part of our April 27th story with the local National Weather Association Chapter. We will be speaking at the 36th Annual Meeting in Birmingham on October 16th. This will be the first ever National Weather Association conference in Birmingham, AL. There will be NWA related events that you can be a part of, including the first ever “Weatherfest.” This will be at the McWane Science center on Saturday October 15th. This will be a chance for you to see meteorologists from all around, including the Weather Channel. We will have Storm Chasers on sight including the Tornado Intercept Vehicle. The National Weather Service, Doppler on Wheels, and much more! We hope to see you on the 15th.

We are programming weather radios in Sumiton today. We’ve had a tremendous turnout and we will be there through 6:30.

Decreasing Clouds

Look for areas of patchy dense fog this morning and a few showers into Coosa, Tallapoosa and Chambers counties.   Those showers are expected to weaken as they shift to our south and east.  Decreasing clouds are in the forecast today.  Highs in the low 80s.   Tonight:  Partly cloudy...lows near 60.

Get ready for some sunhine in our extended forecast.  Thursday looks to be the warmest day in our forecast with highs in the mid-80s.  A dry cold front is expected to move through during the day on Thursday, clearing the way for sunny skies and cooler temperatures for the weekend into next week.
