Today is a big day in weather news. We have officially wrapped up the 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season. I'm always curious to see just how well the official NOAA forecast performs with the actual hurricane season. I'd have to say it verified fairly well.
Irene stands out the most this hurricane season. The storm battered the Atlantic making landfall on Cape Lookout, North Carolina. Irene made a second landfall in New Jersey. The storm reached Category 3 strength in the Atlantic, but weakened to Category 1 just before landfall. At least 55 people were confirmed dead across the Caribbean, 10 U.S. states and Canada. Most of the deaths were the result of massive flooding.
2011 is tied for the third-most active season on record.
