The National Weather Service made it official today. No tornadoes for April, 2012. The last time we were so fortunate was back in 2004. That's awesome news. Plus, the long range forecast looks rather uneventful compared to most severe weather seasons!
In the meantime, I'm sure you noticed. It was hot. Highs reached 88 in Anniston, 89 in Birmingham, and 91 in Tuscaloosa. We didn't see any records, but we did come close.
The forecast looks dry and hot with most of the active weather staying well to our north over the next days. There is little if any chance for rain through the week. Highs will continue in the upper 80s with overnight lows in the 50s.
Short-Term Forecast: Expect scattered clouds with temperatures in the mid 60s. It will be another hot day Tuesday with highs around 90. Temperatures will continue in the upper 80s to possibly the lower 90s this week. Rain chances will stay low this week, but an isolated thunderstorm is possible mainly in our northernmost counties.
Longer Range Forecast: We could see a little better coverage of thunderstorms by Friday. Most of these storms will remain in South Alabama. The GFS continues to try to spread moisture into Alabama. But - it looks like most of that moisture will hug the Gulf Coast. A little rain would certainly be welcome with many areas over 3" below normal.
If you think it's hot this week - I think we'll be in for some extreme heat as we get into the month of May. For the most part - it looks like we'll continue with a fairly inactive severe weather season. This is certainly welcome news.
Long range forecasts indicate a hot and dry Summer.
