This incredible picture was taken by Anniston native Chris Kirby. This shows a tornado that was spotted at the southeast corner of Mount Evans in Colorado yesterday. This is near Lincoln Lake at an elevation of over 12,000 feet. The tornado was brief according to spotters and thankfully no damage was reported.
I’m always asked about tornadoes and their behavior with respect to high terrain or bodies of water. This picture helps prove that all areas are vulnerable to tornadoes, even mountainous areas. I recall taking several pictures of damage paths associated with some of Alabama’s highest peaks on 27 April 2011.
The National Weather Service office in Boulder is researching this tornado to determine if it will qualify as the highest documented tornado in the United State and world.
