We've had cameras for years here at Fox 6 to track the weather. But, we've never had a system quite like this. We are currently building the largest HD weather camera and sensor network in the state. Our first install was Chelsea yesterday. The camera which has the ability to pan 360 degrees is located high atop the Boardman and Carr Law Firm in Chelsea. You can clearly see four counties from that vantage point just off Highway 280.
Our second camera installation was this morning in Bessemer at UAB Medical West. The camera gives us an excellent view of approaching severe weather.
The weather sensors allow us to show you current conditions that aren't tied to an airport location. Essentially - it's neighborhood weather. The system truly is state-of-the-art with no moving parts. Even the wind sensor is ultrasonic. The entire weather sensor package is made by Vaisala. That's the same company produces research grade weather instruments as well maintains the National Lightning Detection Network.
This is an incredible system that can be used both on a daily basis and also for providing critical images during approaching severe weather. Tomorrow we install a camera and sensor in Pell City. The camera will offer an incredible view of Lake Logan Martin. We will continue to expand the SkyVision Network across the state during the coming weeks.
