Warm Up Continues

Thanks to overnight clouds moving through Alabama, we experienced milder temperatures this morning...in the 30s to 40s.  Under variably cloudy skies, look for highs close to 60-degrees this afternoon, right in line with average temps for this time of the year.

Go ahead with your outdoor plans this weekend.  We are expecting warmer air.  Under partly cloudy skies Saturday, Sunday and Monday, look for highs in the mid 60s to low 70s...lows in the 40s to 50s.

Our next best chance of rain and thunderstorms is still expected Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning of next week.

Forecast Update - Rain Tuesday

We're looking at some fantastic weather through Monday. We will welcome December with highs in the lower 70s with no rain in the forecast.  We can expect an increase in cloud cover tomorrow afternoon thanks to an increase in moisture due to the help of a southerly flow.

The sky should be mainly clear tonight with only a few clouds.  Patchy fog is expected to develop after midnight through Friday morning.  The fog should burn off by 7am.  The bright "star" next to the moon is Jupiter and should be visible again tonight.  Temperatures are expected to fall into the lower 40s tonight.  Some of our colder counties may dip briefly into the upper 30s.



Friday should be comfortable with highs in the mid 60s.  Skies will be partly cloudy during the afternoon.  If you have plans to travel to Atlanta for the SEC Championship game - the forecast looks incredible.  Highs on Saturday will reach the lower 70s.  Sunday still looks dry with highs in the lower 70.

A stronger system will impact us on Tuesday bringing rain and thunder to the the state.  I'm not anticipating any severe weather...just a few garden-variety thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon.  Temperatures will be a little cooler behind the system with highs back into the lower 60s.

Atlantic Hurricane Season Ends Tomorrow

Above Average Temps

Yes, it was a cold morning, with most places north of I-20/59 dropping below freezing.  But, this afternoon is expected to begin a warming trend that should take us through the weekend.  Under sunny skies, look for highs in the low 60s today...mid-60s tomorrow...lows 70s by the weekend into Monday.

Our next best chance of rain and thunderstorms comes Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning of next week.

Evening Forecast Discussion: Freezing Temperatures Tonight

Morning clouds finally gave way to a beautiful Wednesday across our area. The skies will remain clear through tonight and this will help set the stage for freezing temperatures. Lows tonight will range between 26 to 32 degrees, with the coldest readings in our outlying communities.  After a frosty start tomorrow, look for highs to rebound into the low 60s, with more sunny skies.

As we hit the final stretch of November 2012 our weather will be influenced by a strong 1032 MB surface high pressure area, centered near Blacksburg, Virginia. As the center of this high builds to the east, a southerly wind flow will develop over our state. Models are hinting at an increase in clouds, with the possibility of mostly cloudy skies by Friday night; highs will remain in the low to mid 60s.

The first weekend of December looks to be great! Highs for Saturday and Sunday will be in the upper 60s, with some locations nearing 70. All the Tide fans can also expect similar weather for the Atlanta area. Monday will also be a dry day but we will be talking about returning rain chances on Tuesday. Another cold front is set to arrive Tuesday night and this will bring rain and thunderstorms. Much like earlier this week, it looks like the rain will depart early Wednesday, with some lingering clouds. Its way to early to determine if strong thunderstorms will be in the mix but given the time of year we will watch this system closely.

Sunshine Returns

Cloud cover lingered across Alabama in the overnight hours, keeping our morning lows from dropping further. 
By mid morning we should see most of the cloud deck begin to erode.   Look for sunshine to return this afternoon and to stick around for the next several afternoons.  Highs today are expected to be on the cool side...in the mid-50s.  Under clear skies, overnight lows will likely average in the mid-30s.

Dry air is expected to remain in place through the end of the week and into the weekend.  Temperatures are expected to warm each day until we top out close to 70-degrees on Monday.

Our next best chance of rainfall comes in the middle of next week.

Another Chilly Night with Drier Skies Coming

The clouds have lingered across much of the state today keeping temperatures cool with the help of strong cold air advection. We're under the influence of a northwest wind. The cold dry air should help erode the cloud cover tonight and allow for even colder tempeatures.  This is the view from our Chelsea SkyVision camera around 4:30pm.

Tonight: Expect mostly clear skies after midnight with lows ranger from 31 in Gadsden to 35 in Bimingham and Tuscaloosa. Anniston's low will dip to around 31.

Rest of Week: High pressure will dominate our forecast for the rest of the work-week. This will mean sunny skies with highs in the upper 50s to lower 60s. No rain is in the forecast for the rest of the week including the weekend.

Weekend Forecast: We may see a few additional clouds over the weekend due to the return of some moisture from the south. Highs will reach the upper 60s and lower 70s. Morning lows will be in the lower 50s. No rain is expected through early next week. Temperatures will remain above average.

Morning Rain/Storms...Clearing This Afternoon

Showers and thunderstorms may affect early morning commuters, but the heaviest rainfall should be east of the 20/59 corridor before rush hour begins. Roadways could remain slick, however, since it hasn't rained in awhile.  Our morning storms are expected to remain below severe limits.

This afternoon, the rain should be south and east of I-85 and your PM drive home should be easier.
Tonight, under clear skies, look for our temps to cool into the 30s.

Wednesday through Friday should be clear to partly cloudy with highs in the upper 50s tomorrow...warming into the 60s by the end of the workweek.

This weekend a weak short wave trough will give us only a hint of a chance of rainfall.  Partly cloudy skies is likely what we will see for Saturday and Sunday.

Our next best chance of rain will likely hold off until midweek nextweek.

A Very Dry November In Alabama-Climate Prediction Center 8 To 14 Day Outlook

The Nations Climate Prediction Center has released an updated long range forecast outlook. The 8 to 14 Day Outlook shows near average temperatures for much of the region. Most of the state is expected to receive near average precipitation totals.

This has been a very dry November, with Birmingham’s rainfall total now at 1.12” (deficit for November is -2.83”). The monthly rainfall total in Tuscaloosa is only 0.84” and for Anniston it’s only 0.99.” Hopefully, we will receive some rain tonight.

Forecast Discussion Update: More Showers Tonight; Isolated T-storms

I hope you had a wonderful holiday weekend! Very cold air arrived on Saturday but now temperatures have made a nice recovery, with highs in the mid 60s. Scattered showers are developing in response to an approaching cold front and surface low. This system will be making a push across our state overnight and the rainfall should increase in coverage. There is a slight risk for severe weather over portions of Mississippi. We could deal with a few thunderstorms locally but thankfully no severe weather is expected. This storm system will be lacking upper atmospheric support so we don’t expect too many storms and rain amounts should remain on the lighter side; below a quarter inch in most locations.

The wet weather will be tapering off from west to east early tomorrow, with winds becoming northerly. Skies will begin to clear during the afternoon, with highs in the 50s. Some patchy frost will be possible tomorrow night as lows tumble into the 50s.

Our forecast for the rest of the week is looking very nice! A strong surface high will become centered to our northeast by Wednesday and this will keep our skies nice and sunny. As the high slides east a more southerly flow will help set the stage for a warming trend, with highs nearing 70 by the weekend. A few areas could drop into the freezing range Thursday morning; otherwise, most nights we should have above freezing temperatures across the area.  This nice weather will also be in place to our east so if you’re a Tide fan traveling to Atlanta you won’t have to worry about weather delays.
