The Blount County-Oneonta Agri-Business Center hosts the Blount Kids Day on the Farm each year.
This event is sponsored by numerous local farm-related agencies including the Blount County Farmers Cooperative, Blount County Farmers Federation, Blount Cattlemen and Cattlewomen, FCCLA (Family, Career, Community Leaders of America), and the county's high school agriculture teachers.
A variety of farm animals were on hand for children to become acquainted with.
Tractors of various sizes and styles are displayed for kids to examine.
Current and past farming practices were also exhibited.
Children travelled from station to station enjoying the many exhibits and often getting hands on learning experiences.
There was even a weather station where students learned about weather radios and severe weather safety. Meteorologist Jill Gilardi asked every student that came by what they would do if they were at home and a tornado warning was issued. Their responses varied from going to a: basement, storm shelter, closet, hallway, bathroom, neighbors or family members house, local shelter or church. If students were unsure of their safe place, Jill did some digging and helped the child figure it out.
The visit sparked interest from the locals for a Farming Forecast which Jill will air every Saturday morning.
Here are some pictures from the day:
